Pen-Y-Fan

Introduction

We are delighted to announce the first Club Away Trip of the academic year (and indeed, the first trip since early 2020 due to you know what!). We’re off to explore some of the peaks and scenic spots of the Brecon Beacons. As this is the first in a long while, we’re treating you with a very high-spec bunkhouse and will be walking in very scenic areas. We’ve put this document together to give you an idea of what to expect during this trip.

Transport

All transport is included in the cost. We will be travelling by minibus and an extra private car. At the end of the trip, as it’s likely to be very late when we get back to Southampton, we will drop you back at your house/halls.

Accommodation

We’ve booked the farmhouse at the Argoed Lwyd Outdoor Education Centre, formerly known as the Hampshire Mountain Centre. It’s owned and managed by Hampshire County Council, but situated in the central northern Brecons, with views of Pen Y Fan (less than 4 miles away). We have a total of 22 beds split over 5 rooms. Bedding is provided (although we need to bring pillow cases and sheets). Regulars of the Club will know is rare!! There is no wifi and limited phone signal, but electricity and running water are provided, as well as a massive kitchen, dining area and lounge. IMPORTANT: Please note that as a condition of booking, NO AEROSOLS (including spray deodorants and hairspray) may be used inside the bunkhouse. This is apparently due to the sensitive nature of their fire alarm system, which automatically calls out the fire service if activated! They may be used outside however.

The walks

Two walks, one on Saturday and one on Sunday, will be provided and led by our Away Trip Secs. We're currently planning on doing:

Please note that the walks hosted on the trip may differ from what is described above due to circumstances outside of our control (more often than not the weather!). Don't worry, we have some backup routes planned too!

Kit list

For this trip, YOU MUST bring the following items:

You may also want to consider bringing the following items to improve your trip experience: If you need help sourcing kit, we can help! Just drop us a message and we can always advise. Decathlon in the city centre is a great spot to get some starter kit.

Food

We will be providing the following for your culinary delight (vegetarian by default). Vegan and other dietary requirements also supported (let us know on signup). Dinner is cooked by the committee but food prep may be requested. It is expected that those who did not help cook assist with washing up. We provide:

We will stop off on our journey back to Southampton for some food, most likely at a Wetherspoons near Cardiff - this is not included in the trip fee.

COVID-19 precautions

To mitigate against the risk of having to self isolate within the bunkhouse, potentially incurring an extra 10 days of costs, we will require ALL attendees to provide evidence (in the form of the NHS text or email confirmation) of a negative lateral flow test, taken no longer than 48 hours before the trip, before boarding the minibus. Sorry, we are unable to accept proof of vaccination as an alternative. Free lateral flow test kits are available at almost any pharmacy, or from B38 on Highfield Campus. We will provide a small amount of hand sanitiser for use inside the bunkhouse, however we strongly recommend you bring your own personal bottle.

Since we are requiring a negative COVID test before departure, we will not require you to wear a face covering in the minibus or inside the bunkhouse. However, you may of course choose to wear one and we ask that you respect other people's decisions. Please note that the Welsh Government still legally requires the use of face coverings in many indoor public areas so don't forget to pack one anyway.

Trip terms and conditions, and data protection

As with all Club events, we ask that you abide with the Club rules as these form part of the terms. These can be read in full here. Trip spaces are first-come, first-served, and secured on receipt of payment, please see Appendix 1 of the rules page for the full details. As always, failure to pay by the deadline will result in your reservation being passed to the next person on the waiting list.

Whilst we have multiple rooms for this trip, we cannot guarantee that all rooms will be gender segregated. If this is a critical issue for you, please let us know in the "other needs" box of the sign-up form and we'll see what we can do!

All data you submit will be treated as confidential and only viewed by the relevant Committee members (or the Emergency Services in the event of an emergency). Data will be permanently deleted after the trip has ended. COVID - trips are "covid-secure" and if you attend the trip, your data will be stored for 21 days to comply with contact tracing requirements.
